Kathleen Barber

29th December 1945 – 10th June 2026

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Kathleen Barber. She was a joyful and vibrant woman whose energy expanded into every space. Her passion for spirituality and personal growth inspired those fortunate enough to know her. Throughout all aspects of her life, she cared deeply about honouring those she encountered with her infectious sense of humour, warmth, love, respect, and dignity. Kathleen was a devoted mother and a passionate advocate for justice and equality.

As the eldest surviving child of five, Kathleen was a natural leader who personified the boldness of her generation. She disliked limits of any kind, always seeking new possibilities and blazing new trails. That independent spirit was one of her most beautiful qualities and a defining pillar in how she navigated all of life’s stages.

Kathleen’s devotion to her family extended into raising her two daughters, Janet and Stephanie. She encouraged them to be brave and wild, true to themselves and their inner knowing. She gave them the space to explore and the security of her love, always ensuring they had a safe place to return to.

Central to Kathleen’s life was the pursuit of knowledge and the solace found in books. Her long career in publishing spanned bookselling, publicity, and library services, including roles with HarperCollins Publishers, Classics Bookshops, Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver Kidsbooks, and the Vancouver Public Library.

She was never one for idleness, so when it came time to retire, Kathleen expanded into her next endeavour with courage and creativity to fulfill her long-time dream of becoming a minister. At sixty-five, she went back to school, inspiring us all that it is never too late to follow your dreams. She served as a minister at Pacific Spirit United Church, offering wisdom, hope, and compassionate support to many. As part of her ministry, she volunteered at The Listening Post on the Downtown Eastside, where she loved engaging with people and listening to their stories. Her love of connection continued during her time at Arbutus Manor, where she filled the halls with great conversation, her signature laughter, and the sound of her jingling jewelry.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Janet and Stephanie; her brothers, Michael and John; her nieces and nephews, Bridgeen and David, and Kelly and Mary; her cousin, Sarah Hart; and many more whose lives she touched.

Kathleen was predeceased by her beloved sister, Bridget, to whom she remained deeply devoted and who passed away one year before her; by her older brother, Davey, who died in childhood; and by her parents, David and Janet Barber.

Kathleen was the person people turned to for guidance, perspective, and kindness. Her life was defined by curiosity, compassion, courage, and an enduring belief in the possibility of growth. The impact she had on the lives of those she touched is immeasurable. She was a force of nature and a force for good. There are no words to express how much she will be missed.
