Cremation Services in British Columbia
At KORU, we offer compassionate cremation services for a meaningful farewell.
Cremation Services
Cremation can be a simple and immediate way to care for someone, trusting that, in your own time, you’ll find a fitting way to say goodbye, remember and acknowledge the life lived.
It allows you all the same opportunities as burial for ritual and ceremony, and can be part of a series of sacred and meaningful opportunities to mourn and celebrate the person who died, as well as honour the impact their death has on the lives of those left behind.

Advocating for Aquamation
Currently, flame-based cremation is the only legal form of cremation for the deceased in British Columbia. Aquamation (or alkaline hydrolysis) is a widely recognized alternative “green” cremation process that is practiced in other jurisdictions in Canada and the USA; however, it is not yet possible in BC. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we actively advocate for its legalization.
Meaningful Memorialization
We are proud to offer some innovative and sustainable memorial options for cremated remains:
- Living Reef Memorials are permanent underwater cemeteries that revitalize overfished areas into biologically healthy and productive ecosystems.
- Parting Stone transforms ashes into a collection of beautiful “river rock” stones.
Cremation Basics
Here are some quick facts and good-to-knows about cremation:
- Cremation is one of two legal ways to care for the deceased in BC, the other being burial.
- 48 hours is the mandatory, legally required waiting period after death before a cremation can take place.
- A cremation usually takes 2-3 hours.
- The amount of ash after cremation is more dependent on bone density than body weight. 200 cubic inches (3277 cubic cm) is the average volume of cremated remains, and 7-10 lbs (3-4.5 kg) is the average weight.
- In BC, the deceased must be cremated inside a rigid, combustible container.
- Scattering ashes in BC is not illegal. There are guidelines and local bylaws to adhere to, depending on where you scatter (land or water).
What Our Families Say
Rebecca and Ngaio were kind, knowledgeable and professional. They had helpful suggestions and assisted our daughter and myself to smoothly navigate a sad and difficult time in our lives after the loss of my husband and her dad. Many thanks to Rebecca and Ngaio.
Our family will always be grateful for the exceptional care we received from KORU during one of the hardest times in our lives. From our first conversation, Rebecca treated us like family. She listened intently, answered every question with kindness, and guided us through each step with genuine compassion. Her gentle care and extra support have made a world of difference as we have been navigating our loss. We felt cared for in every detail, and that personal touch has helped ease our hearts during this incredibly challenging period. Thank you, Rebecca and the entire KORU team, for being such a rock for us when we needed it most.

I am so very grateful to your service for providing us with a seamless, comfortable choice for Jak’s passing. I think fondly about the caring, sensitive service you provided while you spent time with us. I’m still grateful for everything you provided for our comfort and understanding.
Thank you, S.King
Dear Ngaio and Rebecca,
Thank you for holding space with such grace and presence for our dearest father. We now hold a beautiful memory of having him finally come home. I am so grateful our deepest wishes could come true. I know Papa is so grateful too.
Much love,
Samera & Family
On behalf of our family, we would like to extend to you and Rebecca our sincere appreciation for your help, support and compassion during our difficult time. Everything was done professionally from our first meeting through the funeral and afterward. Your kindness and attention to detail really helped us and we are very grateful. Our dad would be pleased with the whole service, as we are too.
