Dr. Morley Sherman Lipsett March 18 1936 – October 22, 2014
Morley Lipsett, scientist, educator, entrepreneur, passed away on Oct. 22, 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Morley’s accomplishments included: working on the Hubble telescope, influencing Industry Canada’s early research and development policies, bringing the SR&ED program to Western Canada, and supported his wife and daughter in the establishment of the Crystalworks Gallery. A man for all seasons, he was instrumental in bringing the EST movement to Canada, and promoting the linguistic/ontology work of Flores and Maturana. As a result of his many achievements, Morley was accepted into the prestigious World Academy of Art and Science; however, his greatest achievement was his family, whom he loved dearly. He will be greatly missed by all the people he touched, including his wife, Susan; their children, Jordan (Sarah), Karen (Finn Kidd), and Andrea; and grandchildren (Jesse, Bodhin, Mikayla, Julia and Oliver.).

Your family came up in my thoughts today as I work on a retrospective for my brother’s daughters. I am stunned and dismayed to find Morley gone and the opportunity to reconnect is gone with him. He gave me so much, as did your family, which I needed. His care and concern for his community and his family live on.

Such a joyful man. His warmth and good humour were matched by his keen intellect. It was a privilege to spend time in his company as he was almost always working on something important. Unforgettable.

I am sad to know Morley passed. I would have liked to thank him personally for all he did for me and my professional future. Ever since I came to Canada as an international student to SFU Harbour Centre English Course, he and his family opened the doors to me and my future wife by giving us the opportunity to volunteer with him and for him at the universtity, to work at his wife Susan’s precious and semiprecious stone Gallery where I was hired to clean the place and learn about them and the stones they sold. He helped me to extend my stay in Canada as an international student. I went back to my country and his letter of recommendation helped me to present my inmigration application before the Canadian gvmt. After four years of waiting in my country to come to Canada we exchanged email msgs and finally I was granted Canadian visa. I was assigned to go to Alberta and kept thinking to go to BC and thank Morley in person for all he did for me. Now that I am in Vancouver, found out he is in a better place but still I feel sad and also very grateful. See you Morley.
