Velma Jean Rebecca Cross (née Moore)

With saddened hearts the family of Velma Cross announce her recent passing aged 86 years at Crofton Manor, Vancouver, BC.

Born in 1939, to Helen and Ed Moore, Velma was a true Vancouver girl, born and raised. She lived her entire life in the city. She graduated from Gladstone High School and attended the University of British Columbia, where she trained as a teacher.

Velma was an intensely vibrant and creative woman, a lover of beauty and the arts. She taught ESL, managed a dance company, sang in the choir at Canadian Memorial United Church, and made and sold her own jewelry and specialty cards. She was a joyful gardener, voracious reader, amateur photographer and avid traveler. She loved good movies and leisurely, sumptuous meals with family and friends.

She leaves to their memories her son Stephen and his wife Coreena of Langley, B.C., her son Jason and his wife Allison of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, her much loved grandchildren Maclen, Annabel, Atticus, Lushala, Mark, Madeline, and Lucia, her niece and nephews, and many good friends near and far, especially “The Gladstone Girls” – Judith, Donna, Eileen, and Maureen.

Velma was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Laura Santick and Peggy Bozman, her beloved daughter Carla, as well as husbands Jack Smith and Leigh Cross, with whom she shared the last 25 years in their beautiful home on East 6th Avenue.

The family is most appreciative of the love and care Velma received at Crofton Manor and from her home care team before she moved. Especially we thank Tik, Shelley and Sera for being available to visit and support Velma through the last part of her journey.

A memorial service for Velma will be held in the spring. Stories and memories about Velma can be sent to her niece Karen McDonnell, 7989 Birchwood Drive, Trail, BC V1R 4Y3. No flowers please. A donation to a charity of your choice is preferred.

KORU Cremation Burial Ceremony is looking after the end-of-life details.

I have many fond memories of visiting my Moore cousins on East 33rd, in Vancouver and many visits when they came out to Dad’s farm for picnics. So nice that Velma is at peace now. Jim

My wife & I loved our times with Velma and Leigh Cross. We often called at the last minute to arrange dinner plans. They introduced us to the Stratford Festival, where we still attend every Fall with friends. Now that they are both gone there’s a hole in my life where Leigh and Velma were. Velma recommended me to a treatment for sleep apnea. It was a success and I am cured. I’m happy for Velma now making her journey to new and exciting places. I send my love to you Velma. Dale

Both Velma and Leigh spoke about your friendship and the time your spent at Stratford. Thank you for sharing your memories.

Remembering my city cousins and family that would visit us often on Sundays in Langley for a good home grown chicken dinner, games, laughter and lots of fun. Also our visits to their house every Christmas for lunch. Sending our love and prayers to Velma’s family.
